Hankyung Residential Culture Awards in the first half of 2022
Review – Park Chan-sik, Professor of Architecture at Chung-Ang University

Over the past two years, uncertainties in the macroeconomy have been increasing as inflation has become a reality due to the COVID-19 incident and worsening global supply chains. The environment surrounding the real estate market, such as interest rate hikes and trading cliffs, is also not easy. In the meantime, 33 construction companies and implementers applied for excellent works in a total of 15 categories in the first half of the year for the Hankyung Residential Culture Awards, which have led Korea’s residential culture for the past 20 years.

The award-winning work was selected by the Korea Economic Daily’s internal review committee by document review, and the comprehensive and apartment awards were selected through the second discussion of the judges.

The winners of the grand prize were Hanho Construction Group’s “Sewoon Purgio G-Palace” in Seoul, “Hillstate Lagoon In Terrace 2nd” in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, and Hyundai Engineering’s “Hillstate Middle East” in Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province.

Sewoon Prugio G-Palace is a luxurious living accommodation facility that will be built along the old road reflecting the reorganization promotion plan established in Eulji-ro, Seoul. The low-rise street activation plan received good reviews. Hillstate Lagoon Terrace 2nd was well-received for its eco-friendly open terrace design that utilizes the advantages of Lagoon (a lake facing the sea) marine leisure infrastructure and waterfront location. Hillstate Middle East is considered the award-winning work for improving the comfort and convenience of unit housing through the landmark plan in the center of Bucheon City Hall Station and the design of three balconies and bays (three rooms and a front-facing living room).

Raon Construction’s “Laon Private Center,” which won the grand prize in the apartment category, was selected as the award-winning work for creating an open nature-friendly residential environment in the city center by forming the highest landmark in Jincheon-dong, Dalseo-gu, Daegu. GS Engineering & Construction’s “Wonho Xi the Fore” was highly evaluated for creating a pleasant natural environment in connection with a large-scale wild castle park in Wonho, Gumi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, and for its L-shaped layout design that minimizes interference between households.

In the first half of this year, it was also confirmed that the pursuit of convenience in life using smart Internet of Things (IoT) technology and product-specific strategies through landmark-type exterior design harmonized with the surrounding natural environment is a universal trend. In addition, the creation of a healthy community complex that combines eco-friendly green technology has become an indispensable residential trend.

Through the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of home has increased. Consumer needs are also expected to change a lot of consumers. The convergence of smart IoT convenience technology and green well-being technology will accelerate further. The era of smart homes in the digital world, the final product of the recently circulating metaverse (virtual reality) technology, is likely to come at a faster pace. K-cultural contents are active in the center of the world. The era is coming when Korean residential cultural products can also attract the attention of the world.

While adapting well to the unprecedented Corona era, it is necessary to actively cope with social and economic changes caused by the progress of the 4th Industrial Revolution technology, and to create a more innovative and global housing market. In addition, construction companies and implementers with high ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management indexes, which emphasize eco-friendly, social responsibility, and ethical management, are likely to be evaluated as representative companies of “K House,” so they should be actively prepared.
